REEL PALESTINE 2024
10TH EDITION
Like the fabled Phoenix, the Palestinian people rise from the ashes. This year’s visuals are derived from the Gaza City shield— as a tribute to the Palestinian people— the magnificent creature that symbolizes renewal and rebirth. For this edition of Reel Palestine we are ignited by the resilience of the Palestinian people, particularly those in Gaza, who have been figuratively and literally burst into flames fighting for the right to exist.
Ten years of Reel Palestine marks a reminder of the festival’s commitment to the enduring Palestinian value of sumud or steadfastness. From January 26 to February 4, 2024, Cinema Akil will be home to the films and stories of our present. Opening night pays homage to sumud with festival veteran Farah Nabulsi’s latest feature: The Teacher, a quiet revolt starring Saleh Bakri. The Palestinian collective narrative is further explored through the harrowing survival/s of Lyd through its ravaged ages, the cacophonous defiance of Tomorrow’s Freedom: Marwan Barghouti, the perils of refugee journeys in Notes on Displacement, enduring family bonds in Bye Bye Tiberias, Mohanad Yacubi’s cross-continental experimentation in solidarity via R21, tattered recollections of a fading memory in Aida Returns, the surreality of geographic isolation and control in We No Longer Prefer Mountains, and the hardened exhale of Three Promises by first-time filmmaker Yusef Srouji. Alongside the film program, stand the masterclasses and workshops exploring these themes, as well as the RP Souk featuring Palestinian small businesses and organizations in the largest participation to date.
We invite you to join us in experiencing Reel Palestine through this lens, sharing film, stories and food all while supporting the community of businesses and individuals working towards the same cause: uplifting Palestine through its struggle and persistence.
Hosted by Cinema Akil, Reel Palestine is presented by Bayt and supported by Bristol and Advanced Media.
